Wales' top Indian restaurant, Purple Poppadom, has claimed another award for being the best in the country. The Cardiff-based venue took home best in Wales at the Asian Restaurant Awards 2023, which are open to restaurants across England, Wales and Northern Ireland and recognises the entire range of Asian cuisines on offer.
Purple Poppadom, which celebrated its 10th birthday in 2021, is one of the capital's most renowned Indian restaurants and already has dozens of accolades under its belt including Best Restaurant in Wales at the British Curry Awards 2021 and it's been listed in the Michelin Guide, too.
Chef-owner Anand George serves coconut and curry leaf fragranced cooking from his home region of southern India, but there are also high-end versions of dishes from across the country. As well as the PP in Canton, Anand also has the streetfood stall Tukka Tuk in Cardiff market and is on the cusp of opening the Tukka Tuk Canteen over on Whitchurch Road.

While Tukka Tuk serves Indian street food one offs like their Bombay Fries, Keralan fried chicken and Frankie Rolls, Purple Poppadom gives you curry in a more traditional restaurant setting, but with a far from traditional menu.
They include Tiffin Seabass, their signature dish, Malabar Fish Curry, and their famous chocomosa - yup, chocolate samosa! Read what we thought of Purple Poppadom when they picked up their 2021 award, here.
The Asian Restaurant Awards were held at the Hilton in Manchester on July 31 and winners are picked by a panel of judges made up of experienced catering professionals and other experts. Addressing an audience of more than 500 of the country’s leading Asian restaurant owners, chefs and local dignitaries - awards organiser, Yawar Khan, chairman of the Asian Catering Federation (ACF), praised the industry’s response in adapt to "fresh culinary ideas" and their "willingness to embrace the more discerning needs of the public."
